Great Berry is a recent district of Basildon New Town, and St John's was designed as a Church Centre to serve the developing area.The building contains a multi-use gathering space, divisible into three separate parts. Normally, the worship element of that would fill only one bay, but the layout allows the sanctuary to be set up within the centre of the whole main space.The main space is supported by meeting rooms, offices, coffee bar and the usual range of kitchen and lavatories.The free-standing bell tower marks the entrance, and draws attention to a modest building, situated in a flat and rather featureless landscape.
