The church of St Bede suffered major fire damage in August of 1991. Two months later APEC were appointed as architects for the rebuilding.

The site occupies an area of 0.6 acres and had originally been intended for a church and hall. Only the hall was built, and this had served as a dual-purpose building. Since the new church was to be multi-use, it meant that there would be surplus land from which funds could be raised through a sale for compatible use. The outcome was a scheme for seventeen flats providing a mixture of special and general needs units.

The site is bounded by three roads, and the designs of the church and housing have attempted to acknowledge the two corners. The worship area seats about eighty people and can be expanded to accommodate around two hundred on special occasions.
