National Centre for Contemporary Arts  Carlow

This design was done as an entry to an architectural competition in 2002. The requirements of the brief and the limitations of the site and budget require a building that follows a factory ethos. This approach allows flexibility, buildability and affordability. It also leads to a building of a robust character, providing the right environment for an art factory. In order to allow flexibility of plan (to meet both current and future needs) it is considered important to have a simple building envelope capable of accommodating a variety of internal arrangements. The form has only evolved from function in the sense that it allows for changing functions.

The proposal entails a simple steel framed structure based on a six-metre grid. Clear spans are generally twelve metres, but extend to eighteen metres for gallery one. All areas have simple pitched roofs with no internal valley gutters that might lead to maintenance problems. Within this concept, the options of building to suit available funds are easily managed. The shell can be built either in whole or part and then kitted out with independent walls, floors and fittings as finance allows. In appearance, the external envelope makes reference to the arches and materials of the existing ball alley. Proportions follow classical principles.
