In late 1988, APEC were appointed to design the new college and its associated residential building. The college buildings were to cost about £2.4 million and be completed in the autumn of 1991. These objectives were achieved and the building was formally opened by Her Royal Highness, Princess Margaret in the summer of 1992. The main entrance to the building is from Cavendish Street where the two storey form, with its chapel lantern light, projects a distinct street identity. The remainder of the College is mainly single storey, and encloses a square courtyard that is intended to provide an area of quietness and simplicity. The principal circulation routes look into the courtyard helping users to be more easily aware of their location in relationship to the whole. The building is square on plan; the turreted corners helping to articulate the form and providing friendly meeting spaces within. The construction methods and materials are traditional, acknowledging the slate, brickwork and rendering of the surrounding buildings.
