The Grade II listed Rhydlydan Mill is situated in Powys, Wales on a site that includes a miller’s cottage, a farmhouse, and a stables building. The Mill has been disused since the 1940s, and in spite of having lapsed into a poor state of repair, the machinery has remained largely intact. The site’s rural location means that new development would not normally be permitted. However, following appointment of APEC in early 2005, a principle for redevelopment of the entire site was agreed with the planning authority in order to fund the preservation of the mill.
The site layout was carefully planned using the new buildings to enhance the unity of the site and relationships of the existing buildings to each other, whilst minimising the impact of the development on the setting of the mill. The design of the new buildings reference the local character in the palette of materials adopted, whilst offering a contemporary interpretation of the vernacular.
The scheme provides 12 self-catering holiday lets, set around the access drive and courtyard, providing a variety of sizes of units and addressing the shortfall in wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation in the area.
