vicarage for st agatha sparkbrook

The new vicarage has been constructed on land previously occupied by the west end of the church of St Barnabas. The east end of the church remains after being restored as a result of major fire damage. The site occupies a corner of a busy shopping street, and presented several challenges:

a. Sensitive articulation of a street corner.
b. Preservation of a dynamic approach to the church entrance.
c. Creation of a domestic building within a predominantly commercial environment.
d. Provision of security without the creation of an unwelcoming ethos.

The new vicarage is conventional in the accommodation provided, but unusual in its setting and architectural response to the High Street location. The Òfront doorÓ is accessed via a secure garden at right angles to the shopping street. The main rooms of the house face south into a walled garden.
