…APEC Architects have carried out an excellent and painstaking restoration of St Martin’s in the Bull Ring, and the key architectural success of the entire development is the relationship between the old church and the new Selfridge’s glittering and curvaceous facade.

Ben Flatman, RIBA Journal

It’s a place of wonder and enchantment, the people’s church, restored to the centre of the city and serving the people of Birmingham in many different ways.

We worked in a team with expert craftspeople to restore the Grade II* Listed church and design a new adjoining building to house community facilities and an arts cafe.

The external masonry was cleaned and overhauled, involving a considerable amount of replacement sandstone, ‘plastic’ repair and repointing. The entire church was re-roofed, and attention given to joinery, ironmongery, leadwork, window protection and repelling pigeons. The new building works wrap around the existing disjointed buildings in the social wing, improving connectivity both internally and externally with a new entrance facing the Open Markets, and creating a unified frontage.

Birmingham’s historic parish church was restored as the focal point of the Bullring shopping centre and received a Birmingham Civic Society Civic Award and Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association President’s Medal.
