We love working with people who love what they do

We are a close-knit studio of creative architects and designers who are committed to the people we design for and their unique needs.  We have over 50 years of experience designing with communities, particularly those within the West Midlands.  We specialise in heritage, community, charity and religious buildings, with many of our projects involving several sectors.

We are architects with a social purpose. We believe that everyone should work, live and play in environments that enable and inspire them. We listen and work collaboratively with people to realise their vision for change by finding innovative and practical solutions to their building needs.

We immerse ourselves in communities to uncover their needs and ambitions

We believe that gaining a thorough understanding of the people we work with and their context is key to helping them realise their vision.

We consider a project’s long-term sustainability, even if it means telling someone they don’t need a new building after all.  We often act as match-makers, initiating mutually beneficial partnerships between socially motivated site owners and complementary organisations.

We believe that inclusivity is to recognise that an individual’s experience of the built environment can be entirely different because of their background.  Since 1969, we have evolved an immersive and user-focused approach to design, and discovered ways to engage meaningfully with people who otherwise have little influence.

With these innovative and pragmatic design processes, we create uplifting places for people.

We understand the importance of responsible custodianship of heritage

We breathe new life into old buildings, recognising the special affection in which built heritage is held by many people in their community, and we see the potential to repurpose historic buildings for new uses, in ways that celebrate the history while ensuring their preservation for future generations.

We believe that our responsibility goes beyond mere preservation of heritage assets, but instead, extends to securing the economically viable use of heritage in a sensitive way, as we recognise that ensuring sustainable occupation of buildings is the most effective way of securing their long-term future.

We have built up lasting relationships with many of our clients over decades - a testament to our collaborative approach, strong communication skills and excellent technical expertise

They offer much more than just an architectural service, as their collaborative approach, and the way they immerse themselves in the understanding of our needs goes far beyond a normal design service.

They are, of course, great architects who provide a high quality, value for money, professional architectural design and project management service to their customers. In addition to their technical skills, the team at APEC bring a wealth of creative, strategic thinking, community engagement and fundraising expertise to their projects. They are also helpful, friendly, fun to work with, and hugely committed to meeting the goals and aspirations of their third sector and community based clients, for our often very limited budgets.

The Community Hall has transformed our ministry, mission and outreach and we are delighted with it. It was a right decision to engage APEC when we did.

We asked the almost impossible... and APEC have done it! The result has already made hardened volunteers speechless with joy.

In the course of the last 10 years we have developed the buildings and our site in conjunction with the community… At the heart of our development is our enduring partnership with our architect APEC. They have proved to be excellent advocates, skilled architects and innovative finders of solutions to support the complex relationships that exist on our site. They are remarkably sensitive to the needs of the local community, ourselves and our partners and have shown time and again that they will go the extra mile to assist us in both the technical design and access to potential funding streams. I feel our relationship goes beyond that of client/provider and more closely resembles a partnership.

The APEC team really support their clients through the process of design development and help them navigate the complicated road to concept realisation. Their process is consultative and their attitude empathetic. I commend them particularly for projects where architecture seeks to articulate the culture of the organisation.
